Gandhi, musical and educational project

On January 30th, 2008 a new Dutch Musical will have its premiere in the Amstelveen Theatre: Gandhi. This day it will be 60 years ago that 'The Father of India' Gandhi was killed. Gandhi, the Musical is a cooperation between several theatre producers, the Gandhiserve Foundation in Berlin, the theatre of Amstelveen and Amstelveen College. The musical will be played by students of the college. The theatre will have a festival week with special movies, shows and expositions.
One of the movies will be Gandhi, my Father.

India, 1915. The British army, less dan 100,000 soldiers occupies a country in which are living over 3 million Indians. Mohandas Gandhi, a tiny man, austerely dressed preaches the principles of equality, domesticity and non-violence. He proclaims that the British will leave India voluntarily. Gandhi is laughed at and put in prison. The little man persists and incites millions of Indians to peaceful resistance.

Gandhi the Musical tells the intriguing story of the life of Mahatma Gandhi. His determination, the love for his wife Kasturba, the breach with his eldest son and his fear for the struggle of freedom getting out of hand will be shown against the background of a tradional and divided India.

Gandhi preaches a message of love, respect and mutual understanding. His life is an example for many freedom fighters like Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King. Mahatma Gandhi became the global symbol for non violence.
